Connecting People.....

Naah not talking about Nokia....I am talking about the latest way of connecting people- Orkut. After I joined my job I hardly get time for checking my mails....replying is out of question. Honestly, after 9 hrs in front of office computer who feels like checking those forward mail messages. At least I don't. But what I do feel like doing and manage time too, is for Orkutting. That's the orkut addiction after all!

Thanks to orkut I found all my old pals in school and college, neighbours who had left, neighbours who are still around, crushes, the guy I "admired" in college, the guy I "hated" in college, acquaintances and many more. Thanks to orkut I have several new friends and a net sister from Lahore! Yes, you read it right. I got a net sister through this fantabulous Google community. I was always curious about lifestyle of people in Lahore. Now I know not only about their lifestyles but also about their customs, traditions and beliefs and ya fashion, movies and gossips! I was baffled initially to hear what young blood there thinks about the lifestyle here in India...and this pricisely is the reason I enjoy interacting with different people. Its good to talk about our perceptions and modify them, if need be.

Thanks to orkut, I have a wonderful friend now. Never thought Internet could actually be the medium for such beautiful friendship and getting the "divine connection" (I see my friend laughing here!)

On other days I manage half an hour or so, replying to the scraps (....and reading other people's scrapbooks...but that's not unethical, or is it?). It's after a really long time that I decided to pass my "surprise free time" doing some useless stuff. I decided to search all my childhood friends and cute neighbours who are now settled in some other part of this beautiful world. And I cannot stop thanking orkut! I found all those I was looking for (though seeing some people was a disappointment because of their "committed status" lol!!!). And not only can you find and interact with ones you were looking for but also have a peek-a-boo in their personal life!!! Now how cool is that!! (LOL) No, it is not that I am interested in anybody's personal life but it is surely interesting to see how people interact with different people. And is it not a good way of keeping an update of your friends' life!

I am orkutting simultaneously while writing this post and I just came across a very old friend of mine.....God he's lost so much weight! Ummm another advantage of orkutting get to see what old friends look like now! ;)

More useful benefits of orkutting includes participation in some interesting communities. I found a Journalists community. The helpful people out there guided me and wilfully answered my queries. I acquainted myself with interesting details in some communities and just came out of the illusion that mine is an "uncommon name." There are so many Purvazzz out there!

I am not surprised by the kind of popularity orkut has now. If you happen to meet somebody and plan to "keep in touch" just ask if he/she is on orkut and enjoy your connection with people!

Absolutely and totally agree with you...
Orkut is seriously good for finding lost friends.
Who knows, it might soon become the back-drop of a new-age manmohan desai movie (two bhai lost in Kumbhmela, reunited on ORKUT!)

Thus Spoke Purva,
Well the article is well written, but I must say that you attached yourself too much with this Orkut menace. I like Orkut , I would say I love orkut in fact. But with in days of starting to use Orkut , I found that I was getting too much occupied by Orkut. Constant scrapping took toll, and I finally decided to distance myself from it. I know the craze is still on and hope that is always on. But I think it’s exactly what yahoo chat and profiles were in early days. Things have just evolved with the increase in our demands. Well the personal angle that you talked bout, the committed statuses, Hmm, Too some extent ya , one tends to go through a heartburn. But then that’s life. I tried my luck for looking for my long lost frens, but didn’t find any. The peeping tom thing that you talked about, too is good about Orkut. You could actually see who is flirting with whom. And the best thing that could happen to me in Orkut was I came across a number of people who actually wanted to shake hands virtually. They all wanted to be friends; well they weren’t any friends in School. I wonder why, people are merely interested in expanding their friends list. I see 100,200 sometimes even 300 friends... That isn’t cool. That’s the reason why I keep flusing people out. As Darwin very well said " If you don’t use a part in your body for long ... Then it ceases to exist ... “So if there is no thread of conversation between me and the person who is a so called friends ... Then it better that I take the action. And yea one more thing. . I would say Orkut's better than my sister, Purva's my sister’s friend... But Orkut introduced me to Purva ... Kudos Orkut!!!”

hey Purva..

If you wanna earn some extra cash, just sell this description to Orkut ... it's one hell of a great advertisement !!!

But, I have to agree with pukhraj (though i have absolutely no clue who he is). Sure, orkut is a wonderful way of catching up with friends and meeting people with the same interests (and Orkut is how I ended up reading your blog) but seriously man, it wastes a LOT of time.

And yes, I know quite a few people whose main aim in life is to expand their contacts' list (irrespective of whether they really do take the time out to talk to their so-called friends) or to beg, yes, virtually beg for testimonials... But then again those are the losers.

And not just them, the other variety of losers on Orkut is present aplenty, too. You know which ones I'm talking about...
"hi i'm a single guy looking for fruandship"
"me hot and smart.. i think you too.. wanna be friends?"

I mean, gawd.. I'm so not gonna be inclined towards talking to you if you're trying to get a girlfriend (and a life)!!

Basically, it gives people from all different backgrounds a chance to contact us, which can be good as well as bad. Talking of the good bit, just as you have a e-pal in Lahore, so do I. And really, this acquaintance gives me some fascinating insight into the differences and similarities of life across the border. It really is a fun experience.

Oh, and, I really have to compliment you on your style of blogging...
And please don't be a lazy blogger like me.. keep this blog goin!

~ a complete stranger

(maybe not anymore.. hell, i've spent quite a bit writing my comment... so well, now i do know you.. just a l'il bit though)

orkut made me realise my insecurities and inadequacies that the world had in general. its a little funny when a girl cleverly hides her status- either single or committed. makes me thoughtful!
i dunno why ppl dont read my blog! i'm glad you did!
